Toxins linked to increased risk of ALS

As a reader of my eTips, you know that I attribute the development of my Parkinson’s disease to exposure to toxins.

It was only by clearing them out of my life… and out of my system… that I’ve been able to keep my PD under control for a decade (and counting).

But the latest research shows that toxins may also contribute to the development of yet another neurodegenerative disease: ALS (a.k.a. “Lou Gehrig’s disease”), a terminal disease with no known cure.

When you’ve got ALS, the first thing you lose is your independence. Just getting dressed or going to the bathroom can become downright impossible to do by yourself.

You may start having difficulty speaking… and then it’s swallowing. The battle usually ends around the time you lose your ability to breathe.

The new study In JAMA Neurology links two pesticides to a dramatically increased risk of developing ALS :

  • Cis-chlordane: Once used as a pesticide on citrus groves and in home gardens, as well as to rid homes of termites, it was banned by EPA in 1988. But since it doesn’t just “go away,” it can still be found in soil across the world.
  • Pentachlorobenzene (PeCB): Used to manufacture pesticides, particularly fungicides. Although PeCB was banned in 2011, it can still be released into the air when waste is incinerated.

Now, the researchers only tested exposure to a single pesticide to determine the risk – which increased by 600 per cent and 200 per cent, respectively – but where you find one, you usually can find lots more.

As if the pesticides weren’t bad enough, according to the researchers, another category of commonly-used toxins creates cause for concern: flame retardants.

Those are the chemicals used by manufacturers protect household textiles and upholstery from bursting into flames.

In the study, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were found to nearly TRIPLE the risk of ALS. Although their use has been regulated, they can be found in soil samples, some drinking water, and fish. And because you could ingest it AND inhale its particles, traces of it have been found in human tissue as well.

I can’t reiterate enough what a serious health risk this is – and it’s not just ALS and Parkinson’s disease. Toxins like these are causing cancer in kids and bringing on dementia in adults earlier than ever.

You can lower your future exposure to pesticides by nearly 85 per cent by switching to organics (and thoroughly washing your produce before you eat it). And you can use natural remedies like peppermint oil, cloves, or cayenne to keep critters away from your own home. You can even swap out your couch and carpet for non-toxic ones.

But what about the stuff that you’ve already been exposed to?

Ask your doctor to test you for toxins. A safe therapy like chelation can help clear them out and quickly bring your levels back down to normal.

And if he’s not willing to do it, find an integrative doctor who will.

  1. We live in such toxic environments its no wonder there are so many diseases going around. The world (and its inhabitants) are in a sad state.

  2. ALS is such a complex disease and it makes perfect sense that environmental toxins will contribute to its development.
