Restore your sex life after prostate surgery

Reader’s Question: A few years ago I had my prostate removed. My sex life was normal before the surgery, but now it’s zero. I’ve lost my desire and have problems with erectile dysfunction. Do you recommend any solutions?

Dr. Glenn Rothfeld: Unfortunately, the symptoms you are describing are very common in men who have had a prostatectomy. They often struggle to regain their sex lives and restore intimacy with their partners.

The good news is that there are some natural treatments that may help. The first is testosterone therapy. It’s not uncommon for men who have prostatectomies to suffer from a condition called hypogonadism, where your body basically stops making sex hormones.

You can imagine what that does to your libido and your ability to perform!

There are some doctors who won’t prescribe testosterone replacement to men who have had prostate cancer, because there has long been a fear that testosterone can feed cancer. But a study out of Baylor University a couple years back found that many men who have been treated for prostate cancer are good candidates for testosterone, and you should discuss this with your doctor.

Remember, I specifically recommend bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, which is safer, more effective and most closely mimics the hormones made by your body.

As far as erectile dysfunction is concerned, there are other natural treatments like L-arginine and Pycnogenol that can help. They relax blood vessels and increase blood flow to the penis. In one study, a combo of L-arginine and Pycnogenol led to a 90 per cent improvement for men studied.
