Probiotics could help rheumatoid arthritis sufferers

If you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, you know that the constant joint pain… the stiffness…. those agonizing first steps of the day… are just the tip of the iceberg.

Before long, the disease can practically shut your life down. You’re hit with crippling depression and constant fatigue, and are suddenly cancelling lunch dates with friends or trips to see your loved ones.

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of several diseases that can take as much of a toll on you psychologically as they do physically. And if you’re looking for some fast relief — if you just want to feel like yourself again — the answer may be simpler and safer than you ever imagined.

A new animal study from the University of Calgary has found that a daily probiotic may improve some of the worst behavioural symptoms that often accompany inflammation-based illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.

For their study, just published in the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers found that mice with serious inflammation became more social and engaged after being fed a steady diet of probiotics, those healthy gut bugs.

Probiotics have a positive effect on your immune system and brain, which is why previous research has found that they can help relieve depression and anxiety.

Now, you always have to be a little careful with animal studies. My patients aren’t mice, after all.

But this research is just common sense to me. You see, conditions like rheumatoid arthritis are autoimmune diseases where your body basically attacks healthy tissue.

In the case of rheumatoid arthritis, your immune system damages your joints. With something like Graves’ disease, it attacks your thyroid instead.

But in any case, part of managing an autoimmune disease means healing your unhealthy, poorly functioning immune system. Much of your immune system lives in your intestinal tract, and probiotics help restore the balance of healthy, disease-fighting bacteria in your gut.

In fact, that’s why I regularly recommend probiotics to my patients with autoimmune diseases.

If you’re suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, or any other autoimmune condition, buy a quality probiotic and give it a few weeks to work. My guess is that this belly bug breakthrough may make a real — and lasting — difference to your health.
