Reader’s Question: I’ve been suffering from anxiety on and off for years, especially at night. I’ve been prescribed antidepressants in the past, and I’d really prefer not to start up on them again. Are there any supplements or other treatments you use?
Dr. Glenn Rothfeld: I treat patients all the time who don’t ever want to see a prescription antidepressant again — and I don’t blame them. They’re tired of the weight gain, fatigue, loss of sex drive and all the other side effects that come with these drugs.
If you want to control your anxiety naturally, the first place to start is your diet.
Many people don’t realise that they are especially sensitive to caffeine and added sugars, which can both trigger anxiety.
Limiting your intake of both can produce pretty fast results.
There are also plenty of vitamin and mineral supplements that can deliver relief. Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, helps most people with anxiety. I typically recommend taking 500-1,000 mg a day along with a quality B-complex supplement.
Ginkgo and Siberian ginseng are two herbal remedies that have been proven to help people control the symptoms of anxiety. Either supplement can be found at most health stores or online.
Finally, it may be a good idea to schedule some time to talk with a psychologist or other mental health professional. They can give you strategies for dealing with anxiety and breaking the pattern of negative or anxious thoughts.
