It used to be that colorectal cancer only affected people over 50. You’d have to be at least “middle aged” to start worrying about it, and you’d really only hear about it hitting seniors.
But according to a scary new report from the American Cancer Society, this potentially deadly form of cancer is no longer just a concern for older patients.
Because now, we’re seeing patients younger than ever getting diagnosed with colon cancer and rectal cancer.
So, no matter how old – or young – you are, it’s never too soon to keep your colon healthy
To be fair, the vast majority of these cancers are still found in the over-50 crowd (specifically, 90 per cent of them). But while the rates have been DROPPING for people older than age 55 for the last four decades – thanks to widely available screenings like colonoscopies that can catch polyps BEFORE they turn cancerous – the rates for those born after 1950 have been GOING UP.
In fact, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reports that the rate of colorectal cancer is starting to go up primarily in those who are only in their 20s and 30s!
You would think that younger folks would be more active… and therefore generally “healthier.”
But as I shared with you just last week, obesity turns out to be a significant risk factor for nearly a dozen different types of cancer – including of the colon and rectum. And right now, adults of ALL ages are fatter than ever.
To maintain good colon health, it’s essential to manage your weight. Eating a high-fibre diet like Paleo will keep things “moving” down there and help shed any excess pounds.
The Paleo diet also includes lots of nuts, which have been proven to stop colon cancer in its tracks.
As well, a recent study showed that having high levels of vitamin D can slash your risk of colon cancer by as much as 90 per cent. Other supplements that have shown some potency in fighting off colon cancer include glucosamine and chondroitin, resveratrol, and curcumin followed by silymarin.
And according to a study last year, just a cup or two of coffee a day can drop your risk of colon cancer by 26 per cent!
The bottom line is that there’s no such thing as “too young” to get colorectal cancer – or to get a colonoscopy.
If anything seems a bit “wrong” or “off” – like if your colon never really feels “empty” or if you find any blood in your stool – get checked out before it’s too late.
