Berberine tackles diabetes and cholesterol

The pairing of high cholesterol and diabetes is something we see quite often. These two conditions share some of the same risk factors, such as obesity. Lifestyle changes, like dieting and exercise, are a good place to start to improve both your cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

However, many people suffering from both conditions are wary of spending several years of their lives on insulin and cholesterol-lowering statins. The good news is that prescription drugs may not be necessary. Berberine is a component found in a number of herbs that has been used in China for centuries to manage type 2 diabetes, and recent research has shown that it also may control your cholesterol and triglycerides.

Studies published in well-known, respected, “peer-reviewed” medical journals in 2008 found that Berberine is just as effective — and of course likely much safer — than metformin, the formerly patent medicine most commonly now prescribed to help re-regulate blood sugar in type 2 diabetes.

Another study also found that in just 13 weeks, patients on Berberine experienced much more significant reductions in cholesterol and triglycerides than patients on metformin.

You can buy Berberine at your local natural health food store. Talk to your doctor about adding it to your regimen.
