Avocado oil fights kidney damage from diabetes

There are some foods you just associate with SUMMER.

Just the thought of them evokes memories of picnics, visits to the beach, and hanging out around the barbecue until all hours of the night.

And while we still have a fair few months to go before we see those  hot summer days again, there’s no reason not to remind you about the incredibly health benefits of one particular summer food: the avocado.

Avocados have been shown to reduce your cholesterol and improve your eyesight – and now, according to a new study, the oil pressed from avocados may be particularly beneficial for diabetics.

Researchers from Mexico have found that avocado oil can drastically reduce the damage to your kidneys that so commonly happens when you’ve got type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes can take over the cells in your kidneys – specifically hijacking their mitochondria, or the “power house” of the cells to produce inflammation-causing free radicals.

But when researchers gave rats modeled with type 2 diabetes avocado oil, free radical production was reduced by a WHOPPING 70 per cent in just six months.

And fighting kidney damage is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how avocado oil helps diabetics.

Switching from vegetable oils (like corn and canola) to avocado oil in your cooking reduces insulin resistance, which helps you keep your blood sugar levels under control.

If you’re diabetic, over time, blood sugar spikes can damage your retina and cause vision issues like cataracts and even blindness. But avocados also contain a carotenoid compound called lutein, which is great for your eyes and can reduce your risk of cataracts.

Now, olive oil may get all the headlines, but avocado oil is also great for stir frying veggies and drizzling on a salad.

But don’t expect it to always taste like avocados – some varieties have more of a nutty, grassy, or even mushroomy flavour.

Wishing you the best of health,
