If you’ve been reading my eTips for a while now, you know that toxic heavy metals like lead and mercury can be found all around us – so much so that they’re even found in our own bloodstream!
But there’s another dangerous heavy metal you should know about that’s found in many items in your own home – and it’s probably in your kitchen… or your bathroom… or BOTH… right now.
It’s ALUMINUM – and it’s been linked to Alzheimer’s disease for over 20 years.
Research increasingly shows that the metal in a simple piece of kitchen foil can alter your central nervous system in much the same way that Alzheimer’s does.
And now, a new study in the French medical journal Morphologie shows that this heavy metal may actually play favorites when it comes to its neurotoxic effects, cherry-picking certain types of people to target based on their genetic makeup.
The only problem? We don’t yet know which genetic qualities might make you more susceptible to it than the next guy.
But we do know that its effects can potentially be devastating.
For example, when you ingest it, aluminum can throw the balance of your gut bacteria off – and that can interfere with your immunity and mood and leave you at a higher risk for diabetes and even cancer.
And when you rub an antiperspirant containing this toxic heavy metal across your underarms, you increase your risk of cysts and cancerous tumours in your breast tissue.
Now, because aluminum is abundant in the earth’s crust, it’s tough to avoid altogether. In fact, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that we ingest nearly 10 mg of this heavy metal every single day… and we probably don’t even realise it.
Since you don’t know whether aluminum will decide to pick on you or not, here’s how to minimize your exposure:
1. Check labels: Aluminum is added to processed cheeses, baking powder, and other foods, appearing on the label as “sodium aluminum phosphate” or “sodium aluminum sulfate.” You can usually find aluminum-free alternatives online or at your local pharmacy.
2. Ditch antiperspirants: The FDA actually mandates that antiperspirants contain aluminum, so it’s best to toss these out with the rubbish.
3. Treat heartburn naturally: Those over-the-counter antacids are not only LOADED with this heavy metal, but they can also make your stomach bleed. Try chewing gum, or even a natural licorice supplement, which can stop acid buildup.
4. Skip the fluoride: Fluoride can latch onto aluminum and take it on an express trip straight to your brain. Use fluoride free toothpastes and mouthwashes; and if fluoride has been added to your tap water, invest in a reverse osmosis filtration system.
5. Cook safely: Avoid using aluminum-based utensils and wrapping or heating and reheating your food in foil.
A holistic doctor can test you for heavy metals in your body – and if your levels are high, he can flush them out with chelation therapy.
