Taurine improves memory and brain function

There are already a bunch of great reasons to like taurine. The amino acid works wonders for your heart and does all kinds of good things for your brain, like putting a lid on anxiety, hyperactivity and even seizures.

Now it looks like this amino acid can add combatting Alzheimer’s disease to its long list of benefits.

Researchers fed mice with Alzheimer’s 30 mg of taurine daily — and it only took just three months to clear out the damage. Remarkably, the brain cells linked to memory started functioning normally again. Even the beta amyloid plaques — the hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease — retreated.

Those changes weren’t just on paper either — they translated to real world results. The mice were actually able to think normally again and complete mazes. Their cognitive decline had literally been reversed!

We can’t say for sure yet that taurine will have the exact same effects in people, but there’s no reason to wait around for those results. The amino acid is a powerful antioxidant with proven anti-inflammatory properties. It plays an important role in neurological development and research has shown that taurine may help improve insulin sensitivity.

To add more taurine to your diet naturally put steak, oysters and shrimp on your shopping list. Or try a supplement instead. But taurine can’t do all that heavy lifting on its own. To make it most effective, add some vitamin B6 to the mix.

But whatever you do, don’t be fooled into getting your taurine from so-called energy drinks like Red Bull. Manufacturers of these energy drinks include taurine to give their products some oomph. But what you’re REALLY getting is a can of liquid sugar.
