Prevent diabetic retinopathy with omega-3s

If you’ve got diabetes, you’ve probably learned that it’s not just about your blood sugar.

The disease can come with a host of other risks… like cardiovascular disease, memory loss, and nerve pain.

And then, of course, there’s the BLINDNESS.

And now, a new study finds that you can cut your risk of diabetic retinopathy if you’re battling diabetes – just by eating more omega-3 rish foods, like salmon!

This is big news – because diabetes is one of the nation’s leading causes of vision loss in adults.

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when your blood sugar levels get so high that it overloads the tiny blood vessels in your eyeballs and causes them to swell. After ballooning, they’ll split and fill the eyes with blood and other vision-blocking gunk that doesn’t belong there.

But now Spanish researchers say that just two servings of fatty fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids – like salmon – can lower this risk, and keep your vision from clouding… or going away completely.

In the study, patients who got 500 mg of omega-3s from eating fish daily cut their risk by nearly half (actually 48 per cent).

That means eating about six ounces of salmon, twice a week.

This diet change works because eating more omega-3s reduces inflammation.

Let’s not forget the host of other benefits of omega-3s beyond protecting your eyes… like improving attention spans and reducing stroke risk. And if the taste isn’t really your thing, you can also benefit from other fish that are rich in omega-3s, like mackerel, herring, tuna, and sardines.

You can also get your omega-3s from a supplement – just make sure it’s a high quality one (not one of the bargain bin types), and that it has both EPA and DHA.

You’ve probably heard that you should eat carrots for good eyesight. And it’s true – because carrots are full of carotenoids that help keep you from flying blind.

The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are also commonly found in many yellow-coloured fruits (peaches, papaya, squash) and green leafy vegetables – and they’ve been shown to lower your risk of age-related macular degenration (AMD).

And there are even MORE natural remedies that can also prevent vision loss and help protect your eyesight.

The flavonoid quercetin can prevent retinopathy and slow down the process that leads to AMD – and it’s found in many berries, as well as vegetables and tea. In addition, the micronutrient resveratrol is found in many dark berries and red grapes and it has been shown to reduce the complications of diabetes, like retinopathy.

And spices like curcumin and saffron can reduce inflammation, prevent against damage of diabetic retinopathy, and improve AMD.
