There are certain times when we know we’re taking cancer-causing toxins into our bodies – like when we inhale cigarette smoke.
But unfortunately, most of the time, toxic materials – especially those that could cause cancer – aren’t quite so obvious.
It’s amazing how many health-wrecking poisons we come into contact with just by breathing, eating, and drinking!
And since many of these toxins enter your body somewhere from the neck up, it leaves us particularly vulnerable to cancers of the head and neck – especially oral cancer.
Now, it’s hard to say that any one form of cancer is better than another, but oral cancer is particularly bad – because if you get it, you’ve only got a 50-50 chance of surviving it.
While avoiding toxic chemicals and other carcinogens should be your first line of defence, new research shows another way you can beat back oral cancer AND keep it from coming back.
All you have to do is eat your (organic) veggies!
According to a study published in Cancer Prevention Research, a compound called “sulphoraphane” – found in so-called “cruciferous” vegetables, like broccoli – can slow and even prevent the progression of cancer cell development in the mouth and throat.
In the first part of the study, researchers tested sulphoraphane’s effects on human cells from the head and neck area – both with and without cancer – in a laboratory dish.
They found that the compound actually cleared the carcinogens out of the cancer cells and protected the healthy cells from becoming cancerous.
It appears that the effects of sulphoraphane survive digestion, too – because a juice mixed with broccoli extract had the same exact protective effects when healthy people without cancerous cells in their mouths drank it.
It even worked if they just swished it around their mouths without swallowing it!
In the study’s final test, the compound halted oral cancer development in mice predisposed to developing it – and those that did get cancer had fewer tumours than the mice that didn’t take the sulphoraphane extract.
Of course, as I said, the best way to prevent oral cancer is to stop abusing the inside of your mouth.
That means you’ve got to quit smoking… stop chewing tobacco… and curb alcohol use… or never start in the first place.
Either way, you can benefit from a daily dose of raw or lightly cooked organic broccoli (about 1 cup a day).
While you can get broccoli seed powder and sulphoraphane in supplement form, your body can make use of the compounds better when they’re consumed via the whole food. That way, nothing gets lost in the extraction process.
If broccoli has never grown on you, there are plenty of other cruciferous veggies to choose from – including organic Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, and even horseradish!Wishing you the best of health,
